Doodling into the Inner World

In my sketchbook, the title on the back of the doodle that inspired this pastel is “Flower of the Universe.” It’s one of my favorite doodles. It has this soft, organic feel, like it’s an aquatic life form. As I expanded that sketch with color, I was excited to use those intense blue pastels that often are too strong for the sky or water. Here, though, they add vibrance and a little mystery.

And this piece is mysterious. After all, how can we envision our inner light? What can you visually express something so ephemeral, so intimate?

I think of our inner light as “the flower of the universe” because that light, that intimate ephemerality, is a mystery essential not just to all life, but all matter. Even cosmic dust is engaged in life. It’s what we are all made of.
