In March I am on the hunt for bloodroots, as they are one of the first wildflowers to emerge, and my spirit is hungry for green things. On my daily hike in the woods behind my house there is a stack of boulders that creates a little shelf, and a family of bloodroots grow there. I wait patiently (or maybe not so patiently) for the leaves to emerge, folded and tinged with purple. And then the spire of the blossom, that opens and cups the cold light of early Spring. Bloodroot blossoms signal that the days of spring, however tempestuous, have begun. They remind us to act with courage, to anchor ourselves in hope.
