Though barely larger than a hummingbird, Golden-crowned Kinglets are remarkably hardy, capable of surviving temperatures ot -40 degrees. To withstand such frigid temperatures they will often huddle together. Historically Golden-crowned Kinglets have spent their summers in the Far North, but their nesting range has been expanding southward, even as far south as the confer stands of the Southern Appalachians. They usually raise two large broods of young, and prefer the thick treetops of conifers, where you can hear their very high calls–an ascending and accelrating series of tees–even it you don’t get to see them.
