The Hawthorn is also known as the May Tree, and is still respected in the Old Country as a tree of enchantment. Hawthorns at wells and springs were often adorned with prayer flags, and the flowers are said to help aid prayers reach heaven. Despite their thorny nature, they are generous trees, providing berries (“haws”) that provide food for birds and medicine for the heart. The hawthorns in this pastel make their home on a high mountain ridge, and inspired me in that wordless way that only the tree people can. I hope I have captured some of that inspiration and healing for you.
